Outrageous activities and allegations have long been negative features of America’s political history–and features of the histories of most other nations. Still, political events that just a few decades ago would have been considered scandalous have become so commonplace in general society and in the political arena that they are now condoned and rarely if ever result in public condemnation.

Even more rarely do they cause politicians to resign and retreat from the public eye–depending, of course, on the political affiliation of the politician and the extent of media affection.
