President Barack Hussein Obama situated himself between a rock and a very hard place when he vowed last year that any use of weapons of mass destruction by Syria’s Bashar al-Assad would be totally unacceptable and constitute crossing some metaphorical “red line” he drew in the Arab sand which would have to be confronted. By foolishly shoving his big shoe into his big mouth with that thinly-veiled threat, our woefully inexperienced commander in chief displayed his abject ignorance of both the intricacies of international diplomacy and common sense practicality.
As a result of his ignorance, Obama is now firmly ensconced in a put-up or shut-up position whereby he–and we, the United States–must attack Syria and risk catastrophic consequences or back down from his threat and look like ineffectual boobs at the same time he degrades America’s authority and influence in the world community.
Fortunately, for him, last Friday evening and following Secretary of State John Kerry’s clear and forceful speech outlining the extent of al-Assad’s alleged but unproven crimes against humanity, our wily leader hit upon a face-saving alternative: Obama decided to throw the whole mess he created into the lap of Congress in the form of a war/no war resolution which effectively makes the legislative branch responsible for whatever happens–and the scapegoat if and when things go very badly.
The relevant text of the president’s AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES:
“The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in connection with the use of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in the conflict in Syria in order to prevent or deter the use or proliferation (including the transfer to terrorist groups or other state or non-state actors), within, to or from Syria, of any weapons of mass destruction, including chemical or biological weapons or components of or materials used in such weapons; or protect the United States and its allies and partners against the threat posed by such weapons” and “the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution.”

Many congressional Republicans, RINO’s and conservatives alike, have taken Obama’s bait and declared they will vote to attack Syria as opposed to what should be their reaction–abstaining entirely from voting on his self-serving charade and allowing Democrats to take full responsibility and bail him out, just as they passed Obamacare without a single GOPer in agreement.
By voting “Present,” as Illinois State Senator Barack Obama did 130 times, instead of ”Yea” or “Nay,” they will publicly make a strong protest statement that they maintain he already has the authority to attack Syria. When he stated on Saturday that “I have decided that the United States should take military action against Syrian regime targets,” he negated any necessity for congressional action–any need aside from seeking congressional cover.
Obama’s other contention that ”This would not be an open-ended intervention. We would not put boots on the ground. Instead, our action would be designed to be limited in duration and scope” were rendered null, void, and farcical on Tuesday by Sec. Kerry’s testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he wouldn’t rule out deploying American boots on the ground in Syria before he realized he had contradicted his boss and hastily added that they have “no problem†with Congress writing a resolution prohibiting those boots.
Of course, Mr. Kerry is noted for voting for war before he voted against war or something like that. He is as trustworthy as Obama and if the Republican Party goes along with the president’s effort to deflect responsibility for launching an assault against a nation which has not even threatened our country–at the same time America is supporting Syrian rebels infested with members of al-qaeda–the GOP will have hit a new low of servile stupidity. In Egypt, in Libya, in virtually all the Arab Spring uprisings, Obama has backed the most anti-American, al-qaeda, terroristic zealots and he’s about to do it again in Syria.
To demonstrate their opposition, indeed their disgust with this administration’s policies, congressional Republicans must do the honorable thing: Abstain from voting on Obama’s resolution, suffer the slings and arrows from his mainstream media, and send the message to the commander in chief and to Americans fed up with war that we should fight our Islamic enemies only when our homeland is in danger. To do otherwise would be borderline treasonous.
