With President Obama prepared to deliver the State of the Union Address in a week, it’s an opportune time to review a few select developments in the state of the world as a whole and the state of the Obamanation.
In two words, the state of Christians in the world is not good. The European Union school calendar confirmed that this week.
Perhaps seeing the handwriting on Europe’s wall and noting that the handwriting is written in Arabic, العربية al-ʿarabiyyah, the EU this week distributed millions of calendars to schoolchildren which omit Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter while including Sikh Baisakhi-Day, Yom Kippur, and the Muslim holiday Aid-el-Kebir.
Former French politician and government minister Christine Boutin contended that the omission of Christian holidays slights “the religion practiced or recognized as forming the cultural assembly of our ‘old’ continent.” She wrote that Christianity has “fallen into the limbo of collective ignorance:” http://tiny.cc/t0oa0
Quashing that silly rumor, the EU calendar-makers subsequently called the omissions merely an oversight which would be rectified in future printings. Another oversight could be the inclusion of Jewish and Sikh holidays which the burgeoning European Muslim communities may rectify after that rectification.
At home, the state of Obama’s national political civility doesn’t seem to be all that good, either.
In his memorial rally in Tucson, the president called for more national civility but his cohorts in the media and elsewhere apparently didn’t hear or chose not to heed that call, that is, unless you consider the remarks of liberal activist J. Erik Fuller to be civil.
Fuller, wounded in the Tucson rampage of fellow liberal Jared Loughner, not only denounced Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle, and Glenn Beck, and people like them as “demented,” hate-filled, “simple-minded rednecks,” and “lunatic fringe” anarchists but threw into that mix the new Speaker of the House, John Boehner.
Following that broad brush rant in the New York Times, Fuller went on to literally target a Tea Party leader with an even more uncivil comment, telling him, “You’re dead!” The threat was all filmed by ABC News which chose not to air Fuller’s words. Fuller was arrested and “involuntarily committed” and Christiane Amanpour reported that he “appeared to direct a threat towards a member of the Tea Party:” http://tiny.cc/kpd43
Appearances aside, Amanpour, who ran the taping, must have concluded in the interests of civility that the public was much better off hearing her assessment of the situation rather than witnessing Democrat Fuller’s demented, hate-filled, simple-minded, lunatic, anarchistic threat.
Yet another demonstration of the liberal interpretation of civility is just in: “In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels:” http://tiny.cc/84rlt
Finally, the state of Washington, D.C., which I’m very aware is not a state but a district, seems to be in disarray.
How else to explain the President of the United States feting the “Paramount Leader of the People’s Republic of China,” Hu Jintao, as if he were America’s close friend and ally rather than the leader of a nation hell bent on defeating the United States on every front, whose hands are still bloody from his brutal exercise of martial law in Tibet, which may have inspired the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre?
Did I mention that Hu is also the direct political descendent of China’s Mao Zedong who was responsible for the murder of millions of Chinese?
Nevertheless, the inscrutable Hu was treated as royalty in D.C., with a sumptuous state dinner “of dry-aged rib eye steak with buttermilk crisp onions, double stuffed potatoes and creamed spinach, a first course of pear salad and a second course of poached Maine lobster with orange-glazed carrots and black trumpet mushrooms,” according to Yahoo News.
In a news conference, Hu sidestepped Chinese human rights issues and essentially told the United States to sit down, shut up, and know its new place in the world: http://tiny.cc/ns507
Who’s next up for a state dinner in Washington? Fidel Castro or Baby Doc Duvalier?
